The Perfect Summer Getaway to Co. Meath

Where better to escape to this Summer than County Meath? This historic county in Ireland's east contains some of the country's most stunning historic sites, gorgeous landscapes, and charming towns. And when it comes to accommodations, Knightsbrook Hotel is unrivalled.

Meath boasts countless attractions and in this blog, we will explore some of the reasons you and your family should make this your holiday destination.

What is County Meath Known for?

1. Home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Meath is the proud home to one of the three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Ireland. Br na Bóinne is Ireland's richest archaeological environment, located within a bend in the Boyne River. Br na Bóinne is well-known for the magnificent prehistoric passage tombs of Knowth, Newgrange, and Dowth, which were built around 3200 BC. These ceremonial structures are among the most important Neolithic sites in the world, and they house Western Europe's largest collection of megalithic art.

2. Trim Castle

Trim Castle is Ireland's largest, best-preserved, and most spectacular Anglo-Norman castle. Trim was named after the Irish Baile tha Troim, which means "Town of the Ford of the Elder Trees," indicating that it was an important fording place on the Boyne River. Because of the importance of this crossing location, a chieftain's dn (fort) and an early monastery was built here by the fifth century.

3. The Hill of Tara

The Hill of Tara is the crown treasure of the Boyne Valley landscape. It gained popularity as the reputed inauguration location of the ancient High Kings of Ireland after being used as a place of burial and assembly for more than 5000 years. From its rolling hills, one can cast their gaze all the way to the Boyne Valley's other magnificent landmarks, such as Loughcrew Cairns, the Hill of Slane, Trim Castle, and beyond.

4. Emerald Park

Formerly known as Tato Park, Ireland’s only theme park is sure to provide endless hours of fun for the family. Prepare to create memories that will last a lifetime with thrilling rides, a breathtaking zoo, and spectacular events.
