Knightsbrook News - Solheim Cup

The Solheim Cup takes place every two years and will certainly be one of the most popular things to do in Meath in 2011. This auspicious event is a team match-play competition pitting ranking US born players from the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour against the ranking European members from the Ladies European Tour (LET). Currently in the lead, the American team heads the score board at 8-3, and has never lost the competition on home turf.

The 2011 contest is scheduled to take place in Meath, Ireland which located in Ireland’s Midlands. The area is renowned as the Royal County Meath and was the ancestral seat of the High Kings of Ireland. Naturally this has made the county one of Ireland’s most historic locations and it features a vast array of breathtaking sites. Included amongst these are the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Newgrange and the famous Hill of Tara, the traditional seat of the High Kings.

Luxury hotel accommodation will be available to all of the supporters of the Solheim Cup in 2011 due to the close proximity of the Knightsbrook Hotel in Trim. Trim is greatly valued as a heritage site and is an attractive little town. Situated on the banks of the River Boyne, the town still has a deeply ingrained medieval presence and the architecture reflects this.

The event takes place over three days. Two sessions are concluded per day during the first two days and these are comprised of eight foursomes and eight four-ball matches. The last day is comprised of 12 singles matches and is certainly the highlight of the event.

During the singles competition, one American and one European competitor square off against each other. The participants play their own ball throughout the round and each records their own score. Annika Sorenstam is also due to take an active role in the 2011 Solheim Cup and has accepted Captain Alison Nicholas’ request that she be named assistant captain for the European team. Book your ticket today to enjoy this and the many other things to do in Meath during 2011.
