Knightsbrook News - Junior Solheim Cup

Those who have booked hotel accommodation in Meath and are excited about the upcoming Solheim Cup can enjoy double the action by catching the exciting junior tournament that runs alongside the main event. The PING Junior Solheim Cup is, like its parent tournament, also a team match play competition that is contested between Europe and the United States. The tournament was inaugurated in 2002, 12 years after the start of the Solheim Cup, and offers girls between the ages of 12 and 18 to experience competition at a very high level. The Junior Solheim Cup has been hosted five times with the USA team winning the three events on their home turf and the European side winning twice in Sweden. Notable competitors having taken part in the junior tournament include the likes of Morgan Pressel, Paule Creamer, Anna Nordqvistr, Tania Elosegui, Brittany Lincicome and Melissa Reid.

The 2011 tournament sees Lotta Neumann captains the European team. Neumann us a former British and US Women's Open winner, and boasts an impressive total of 27 professional wins. She also represented the continent in six Solheim Cup events. The USA team is captained by Meg Mallon, who has won 19 tour titles and taken part in eight Solheim Cup matches. Once the tournament comes to a close, the up and coming golfers will have a chance to meet the players in the Solheim Cup teams and watch them in action at Killeen Castle.

European Team Selection

12 golfers at chosen

  • Participants must be 12-18 years old and cannot have turned 18 before January 1, 2011
  • The tournament is for amateurs golfers and participates must not be members of a competitive collegiate golf program
  • Participant must be a European citizen
  • The top six players from the points table following the Girls’ British Open Amateur Championship 2011 receive automatic selection
  • Six Captain’s picks
  • The Captain's picks are made while considering all junior female events, top performers in amateur events and EGA European Amateur Ranking

American team selection

  • 12 golfers make up the team
  • Each player must be 12-18 years old
  • Only amateurs may participate, and must not be members of a competitive collegiate golf program
  • American citizens only
  • The top five qualified players on the AJGA’s Polo Golf Rankings Girls’ points list at the end of July 2011. Should there be a tie for fifth place, the selection will be decided by individual standing on the Golfweek/Sagarin Junior Girls’ Rankings list
  • The five highest qualified players on the Golfweek/Sagarin Junior Girls’ ranking list who were not chosen from the AJGA’s Polo Golf Rankings Girls’ point list. A tie for fifth place will be determined by individual standings on the AJGA’s Polo Golf Rankings junior girls point list.
  • The Captain will select the remaining two players and the decision will be based on the top qualified top point earners and their track record in USGA events
